Our Neighborhood Programs - South of Market
About South of Market and Urban Solutions
Bringing new vitality to Sixth Street
Since its inception in January 2003, the Sixth
Street Economic Revitalization Program has been
a catalyst for the gradual transformation of Sixth
Street. Designed and implemented by Urban Solutions,
the initiative has attracted 30 new businesses,
created 130 jobs, facilitated more than 103 facade
and tenant improvements. Since 2003, the commercial
vacancy rate in the corridor has been reduced
from 43% down to 9%. New sidewalks, trees and
antique streetlights have been installed from
Market Street all the way to Harrison Street.
The program is funded by the San Francisco Redevelopment
Agency and advised by the South of Market Project
Area Committee (SOMPAC).
Urban Solutions was originally founded as the South of Market Foundation in 1992 to foster the social and economic development of the South of Market Earthquake Recovery Area and greater South of Market community. The organization changed its name to Urban Solutions in 2002. Urban Solutions provides technical assistance to businesses that generate employment opportunities for low and moderate income area residents and works to improve the Sixth Street retail corridor.
This program provides matching grants, free architectural services and low-cost loans to property owners to improve the facades and interiors of their buildings.
Sixth Street offers reasonably-priced retail and commercial space in a centrally located neighborhood in San Francisco.
