The Enterprising Women program is designed to help small business women of color overcome obstacles to their growth, and learn from each other’s experiences.
Women of color and women from low-income backgrounds typically approach business differently from men – from building networks to financial management to selling. For many, operating their business offers them an opportunity to support themselves and their children and grandchildren, to engage community members, and to create a legacy of economic independence.
From January through June 2012, Urban Solutions
will focus this program on 10-15 African American
women. Women entrepreneurs who we have worked with
have expressed great need for developing skills
that would help them grow their business so they
can be successful, hire employees, and give back
to their communities.

During the six-month program, each participant will create an action plan for their business including goals to increase sales through expanded marketing, a new product, or customer incentives. Once a month, participants will meet as a group with women business leaders who will share stories about their personal backgrounds and professional careers. During the course of the project, each participant will be individually assigned a mentor. Through interaction at these meetings and with mentors, participants will increase their financial literacy and learn about asset building, investing, media outreach, trade and professional networks, and networking techniques.
