1300 on Fillmore

1300 on Fillmore photoThe opening of the restaurant 1300 on Fillmore last October represents another major step in the rebirth of the Fillmore as a hip nightlife destination that is rooted in the neighborhood’s rich African American and jazz history. Business partners, and husband and wife team, Monetta White and David Lawrence carried out their plans for a southern-inspired, fine dining establishment with an architectural and interior design that pays homage to the darkly lit jazz clubs of the Fillmore’s past…

Urban Solutions Serves 100th Western Addition Client

100th Western Addition Client photoOn any given Wednesday or Thursday, you might catch Urban Solutions' Small Business Director Helen Branham walking through the Fillmore, checking in on some of the clients Urban Solutions has served. Helen stops by to say hello to Sang Sook Park at the 99 Cent Clearance Center; she drops in to check on construction progress at the Sheba Lounge; not long after leaving Sheba, she bumps into Semere of the Unity Cafe. Helen's presence is tangible in the Fillmore corridor. And no wonder - the number of clients helped through Urban Solutions' Fillmore office has reached the milestone mark of one hundred...

Harvest Urban Market

Harvest Urban Market photoHarvest Urban Market opened its new 11,000 square foot health food grocery store at the corner of 8th and Howard Streets in late June, 2004. As a locally-owned closely held California Corporation with primary shareholder Gilles Desaulniers, Harvest is a rarity in SOMA: a centrally located and accessible grocery store with a focus on fresh food. Desaulniers opened Harvest Market 14 years ago at 2285 Market Street at Noe/16th in Upper Market and Castro. Success in that smaller 3,000 square foot location prompted Harvest to expand with this second store...

1300 on Fillmore

1300 on Fillmore photoThe opening of the restaurant 1300 on Fillmore last October represents another major step in the rebirth of the Fillmore as a hip nightlife destination that is rooted in the neighborhood’s rich African American and jazz history. Business partners, and husband and wife team, Monetta White and David Lawrence carried out their plans for a southern-inspired, fine dining establishment with an architectural and interior design that pays homage to the darkly lit jazz clubs of the Fillmore’s past

Over the last two years, Urban Solutions has teamed up with the owners to ensure the necessary planning and financing were in place so the restaurant could open just as it had been envisioned. In 2006, Monetta was referred to Urban Solutions by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA), as part of efforts to bring new, locally-owned and operated restaurants and entertainment venues to Fillmore Street. Helen Branham, Urban Solutions’ Small Business Services Director, helped the owners polish their business plan and put together loan applications.

With the help of Urban Solutions, 1300 on Fillmore was able to secure $350,000 in financing from the SFRA’s revolving loan fund. Helen also helped the business package a successful loan with Wells Fargo and another loan is currently pending with the Mayor’s Office of Community Development. Monetta felt that “Helen was incredibly resourceful when it came to navigating the city bureaucracy and understanding banking regulations.” She adds, “Working with Helen was fabulous!”

Monetta and David are uniquely positioned to run a thriving new restaurant in the Fillmore. Monetta founded her own business in event marketing and David has served as a top chef in a number of the city’s best restaurants. Monetta also has deep ties to the community; her mother and grandmother lived in the Fillmore in the 50s and 60s. The restaurant’s interior design lets visitors experience the vibrancy of the Fillmore during the jazz heyday. First-time visitors to the restaurant will be struck by the “History Wall,” an art installation that pays homage to the musicians and figures that have played important roles in the community over the years.

In addition to providing a stylish night spot with world class food, 1300 on Fillmore is also a big contributor to the community. The restaurant employs about 50 part time employees, with approximately 20 percent who live in the immediate neighborhood. Monetta also is an active member of the Fillmore Jazz District Community Benefit District and shares her business experience with other aspiring entrepreneurs in the Fillmore. Helen Branham states, “Monetta is very community minded and wants to use her skills to help the community. She has a strong sense of social responsibility.” Among Monetta and David’s other charitable activities, the restaurant offered discounted meals during the holidays to patrons who brought in toys to be given away to underprivileged children. This summer, David plans to teach cooking and nutrition to youth in the Western Addition.

The Bar Method

The Bar Method photoBUSINESS: The Bar Method, an exercise practice that burns fat, carves muscle and has more in common with ballet than with Yoga or Pilates, opened in January of 2008 in the Embarcadero Center 3.

CONCEPT: It is an exercise studio and method geared to create a lean, sculpted and muscular body. Like Bar Method studios in other locations, this studio will license the technique while wholly owning this business start-up in the Embarcadero. The new studio is set to open just in time for New Year's resolutions.

OWNERS: Both Heather Thompson and Hannah Blue have been instructors in the Bar Method and are excited to branch out on their own. Both women have backgrounds in business and are confident that the downtown crowd will be primed to partake in an innovative new exercise program.

HOW URBAN SOLUTIONS HELPED: "We've gotten the loan! Yes, that's right... isn't that awesome? We never could've done it without you!" This was the message that Hannah Blue left on Urban Solutions' voicemail upon hearing that Wells Fargo had approved the pair's application for a $351,000 loan. Small Business Services Director Helen Branham worked together with Hannah and Heather for nearly a year to prepare a successful business plan and loan package for the start-up business. Wells Fargo's Small Business banker Benjamin Wong spoke highly of the two entrepreneurs. "I can think of only one other business owner I've ever worked with who was so organized," Benjamin noted. "With Urban Solutions' help, they fully covered and understood every detail."

WHAT THE NEIGHBORHOOD GETS: Coming to downtown's Embarcadero Center 3 in January, a new 3,500 square foot Bar Method studio on the lobby level. Get ready for a lean, dancer's body in 2008!

Urban Solutions Serves 100th Western Addition Client

100th Western Addition Client photoUrban Solutions began working in the Western Addition in July 2003, after receiving a grant from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency to provide small business consulting services, loan packaging and post loan technical assistance in the Western Addition. Since that time, Urban Solutions has worked closely with clients to secure 15 loans for over $2,000,000 for people who either reside or do business in the Western Addition. It is estimated these businesses, along with the help of working capital, have created or retained over 30 jobs in the Western Addition. The types of businesses served spans the gamut from hair salons to moving companies to a landmark soul food restaurant.

"Urban Solutions' work in our neighborhood has provided a very important service," says Reverend Townsend, President of the Western Addition Citizens' Advisory Committee. Reverend Townsend continues, "Their work with clients has a tremendously positive impact in our community." In addition to direct client services, Urban Solutions also presents a number of workshops in the community. Working closely with the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Merchants Association, Urban Solutions has presented classes on Legal Concerns for Small Businesses, Bookkeeping 101, and Marketing your Business on a Shoestring, among others. The workshops are held at Powell's Place restaurant.

Emmit Powell, proprietor of Powell's Place, says "Urban Solutions' advice and assistance with obtaining financing was invaluable and they have continued to advise me to help my business grow. There is a real lack of such resources in the Fillmore. By having a presence in the local community they provide a vital service to neighborhood entrepreneurs such as myself. Urban Solutions' Fillmore office is open two days a week, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and is located in the West Bay Conference Center at 1290 Fillmore Street, Suite 106. To make an appointment, call (415) 567-4137. Urban Solutions' Fillmore office is supported with funding from the Redevelopment Agency, Wells Fargo, Washington Mutual, Comerica Bank and the Mayor's Office of Community Development.

Harvest Urban Market

Harvest Urban Market photo"Our idea is to create a community market large enough to meet people's needs, without forcing them to drive through the area to buy their daily requirements," says Desaulniers. "Many other grocery stores opening in SOMA are focused on parking lot-type environments. We want to be easily accessible to the neighborhood community. We want to encourage folks to walk nearby to their local store and find everything they need in one place." The market offers organic produce, a salad bar, soups prepared daily, household items, health and beauty products, frozen foods, and a variety of other products.

Urban Solutions assisted Harvest Market in securing financing to open at 8th and Howard from the Mayor's Office of Community Development and Greater Bay Bank. The start-up costs to open the business are over a million dollars. Urban Solutions worked with the owners in compiling financial projections and a business plan and worked with the business to resolve building permit issues. "We are delighted to see this business coming in to the neighborhood," says Jenny McNulty, Urban Solutions' Executive Director. "The market will meet fundamental needs of residents and revitalize a difficult corner." Harvest Urban Market plans to employ at least 45 people in its new location.

A Mobile Blind Cleaner

A Mobile Blind Cleaner photoMelissa Mark and her husband Chris Ferguson have embarked on a unique business venture that is squeaky clean. The business -- called A Mobile Blind Cleaner -- is the Bay Area's first mobile blind cleaning service, providing same-day on-site window treatment cleaning, repair and re-installation services.

With Mr. Ferguson's 10 years of experience as a window cleaner and Ms. Mark's office management expertise, the entrepreneurs knew they had what it takes to open a business together. While researching the market, they observed that none of the existing blind cleaners in San Francisco offers a same-day on-site blind cleaning service. In other parts of the country, mobile blind cleaning services exist successfully, so they saw an opportunity to create this service in the Bay area. By providing on-site service, A Mobile Blind Cleaner offers fast turn-around in addition to hurdling a major industry obstacle: customers view lack of privacy as an inconvenience when considering blind cleaning services that may leave them without their blinds for days.

A Mobile Blind Cleaner approached Urban Solutions for assistance with organizing the business plan, developing financial statements, and applying for a loan. Urban Solutions, helped A Mobile Blinder Cleaner secure a loan for $17,500 to purchase equipment and a truck. A small portion of the loan was also used for marketing and start-up capital. "Urban Solutions was a valuable resource for us transitioning into entrepreneurship," said Melissa. They helped us develop ideas on how to market ourselves and find out about other available resources in San Francisco. Chris reported, "We have been experiencing a very positive response regarding our service and have been able to break even in the first two months of operations, due to our thorough planning. In our first month, we served nearly 20 clients, cleaned over 150 blinds and repaired 15 blinds."
